Training Gear

Training Attire

Our students wear traditional Hakama, Gi top and Kaku Obi. This is necessary to properly hold the various weapons like a daisho (katana and wakizashi) in place. Additionally, samurai moved in a particular way, and this is partly due to what they wore. We maintain this legacy; and our attire connects our movement closer to the samurai’s as a result.

We do also wear Jujutsu Gi and pants on occasion.

While we do not sell uniforms, but we do have vendors that we like doing business with and can help you choose the right items for yourself.
We allow new students to train in comfortable gym clothes for up to 3 months while they are acquiring their own uniforms.

Weapons

We use wooden swords (bokken) and knives for training. We have our bokken custom made to meet Nami Ryu guidelines and we can help you acquire one. We also wear wooden wakizashi and tanto, and use wooden jo staff. Our more tenured students are allowed to bring live swords in for individual kata practice, and this must be cleared by the instructor.

We do have limited number of dojo weapons we allow students to use while they are acquiring their own, so you never have to worry that you won’t have a weapon to use. Our expectation is that students will acquire the necessary weapons within 3 months of training.
